Bruce, 35, Māori, leaves prison after a short sentence.
When Bruce leaves prison, he is appointed a case manager within the appointed government agency responsible for homelessness to find long-term housing. An NGO such as the Auckland City Mission provides short-term accommodation while an organisation such as Lifewise assists the person with skills-building and community participation. Lifewise offers Bruce assistance with reconnecting with his whānau and iwi. As he moves into long-term housing, Bruce has continued connection with Lifewise to build skills and check his progress. He remains a part of the Lifewise community of people experiencing similar transitions so as to avoid social isolation. Bruce’s dignity is respected, as he ultimately selects what services or activities he engages with at Lifewise, but is encouraged and assisted to develop his interpersonal and life skills. He would also be in communication with Work and Income New Zealand, who would communicate with his case manager at Lifewise, to assist Bruce back into the work force by developing his skills.
