If nothing is done to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the 2012 emissions target will be exceeded by more than 30%. What is clear is that the New Zealand government is not exploring even half of the possibilities to combat this problem. New Zealand might do well to rethink its approach in the months leading up to the Copenhagen Summit: there is an opportunity to position New Zealand as one of the countries with an actual desire to tackle global warming, as well as an opportunity to explore new market systems and technological possibilities in the agricultural sector. It does not go amiss to mention that the potential technological advances from being the first-mover to address emissions issues in agriculture, could have positive externalities for the New Zealand economy.
