With the information from this project, a valuable next step would be the development of a holistic strategy to attempt to alleviate this level of suffering in New Zealand society. Research for this strategy should consider the current state of child related benefits in New Zealand, the areas that these benefits address and the areas that have been set aside or that policies have failed to effectively remedy. This will allow an understanding of what is most in need of improving in assisting New Zealand children out of poverty as well as addressing the many areas in a child’s life that living in poverty detrimentally affects.
Such a strategy could adopt elements of the Breakfast in Schools programme implemented in Western Australia with support from the Department of Health, Education and Regional Development and Lands.
