Key areas of difference in New Zealand and Australia (2001).

In New Zealand and Australia in 2003 and 2004 respectively, both governments made explicit the aim of reducing child poverty and providing increased assistance to struggling families. This saw the introduction of the Working for Families Package in New Zealand and the More Help for Families Package in Australia, both building on the already existing types of family assistance and benefits. In New Zealand, it served to continue focus on providing incentives to work and a targeted type of welfare for those not in work. In Australia, the package continued the rise in levels of family assistance and was framed as helping families to better integrate work and care responsibilities.
