Despite increased recognition of child abuse in New Zealand, abuse rates continue to rise. The level of violence toward our most valuable citizens is concerning. New Zealand’s child abuse statistics are among the worst in the developed world; 10 children are killed every year by a member of their family. This website and report discusses ways the government can reduce child abuse and child mortality rates. It will address why child abuse is on the rise in New Zealand and through comparative institutional analysis, find instruments that can be applied to help prevent child abuse. This project will make policy recommendations which include establishing a national framework, mandatory child abuse reporting, a Ministry of Children, and investment in broader community education and initiatives.
