Consequences

All forms of child abuse can have significant short-term and long-term consequences on an individual, family, community and at a national level. This is because child abuse affects development, family and social development, social, health and welfare budgets, mental health services and prison populations. This causes negative externalities, costing the government, and thus society. The human and economic costs of child abuse are very high, therefore, preventing child abuse before it occurs is important.
