Child abuse occurs for a number of different reasons and is linked to adult behaviour. Different forms of child abuse are caused by different factors or different combinations of factors. Some of these factors include, but are not limited to, community tolerance of violence against children; lack of community understanding; adults who have been abused, parents under stress, with mental illness or drug and alcohol problems; lack of parenting skills; and families who are isolated.
