Charities and Non-Profit Organisations

Efforts have been made to address the problem of children’s food insecurity in a pragmatic way at the local level, with food being provided free of charge to hungry primary school children through a number of private programmes and charities.  Two examples are listed below:

KickStart Breakfast

  • sponsored by sponsored by Fonterra and Sanitarium,
  • supplies milk and cereal to breakfast clubs run by 526 decile 1-4 schools

 

KidsCan

  • provides food, clothing, shoes and basic hygiene items to children in 211 decile 1-4 schools
  • food items are pre-packaged and include muesli bars, pottles of fruit in jelly and raisins
