Policy Recommendations

Over and above the recommendations discussed in the preceding section, the following are recommended:

  1. The WHSS’ target can be further narrowed and directed not only to the five priority sectors but can be focused as well to the regions in the country with high fatality rates. These are Auckland, Wellington, Waikato, Canterbury and Otago;
  2. The Strategy’s key actions are geared towards partnership and collaboration. The enforcement and regulatory function of DOL could suppressed the aims of cooperation, thus, a moratorium on random inspections among those who are signatories or participants to the WHSS can be applied for a period of three years;
  3. The collaborating and partnering approach of the WHSS can be replicated by employers to actively engage workers in the workplace.
