Recommendations
- Due to employer stereotypes against men using leave for caretaking roles and due to the practice of dismissal for taking too many sick days, sick leave should be job-protected.
- Because children and other dependents must be looked after when ill, sick leave policy should include the right to use sick days to care for family members and family should be broadly defined.
- Given that employees are not taking leave due to lacking the financial resources to do so, sick leave must be paid.
- Due to the inequalities that have persisted and because there is evidence that implementing a public policy mandate will provide an overall benefit for society, paid sick leave legislation, in the form of the HFA should be pursued.
