Executive Summary

Projections based on population growth from 1996 to 2006, for Auckland city, have predicted an increase of population by 50% over the next 50 years[1]. Population growth places pressure on the environment due to the increased waste generation[2]. This project seeks to find possible initiatives that will encourage environmentally friendly behaviours in Auckland. Sustainability through recycling is the policy topic area that this project will concentrate on specifically. Increased awareness can encourage active participation in environmentally friendly behaviours, which as a result can reduce the environmental impacts of population growth, such as a depletion of natural resources, soil contamination, energy usage, pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Through comparative analysis of other states, this project seeks to provide initiatives that will promote environmentally friendly behaviours in the public and private sectors within Auckland city. By exploring initiatives of other states and their councils, this project looks to find a palpable initiative that is best suited to the needs and issues of Auckland.
