There are many reasons why Maori methods of sustainability should be implemented alongside government regulations at all times when environmental management is being considered. By allowing Maori kin groups environmental management over natural resources, or CPR’s such as fisheries and aquaculture, New Zealand may advance economically while practicing sustainable management at the same time.
There is scientific evidence which shows that climate change is occurring even if people are still sceptical. Statistics New Zealand explained that the green house gas emissions from New Zealand have increased over the years, and that streams and rivers are being polluted. With Maori kin groups overseeing environmental management over natural resources in their areas, pollution may not be so great. Natural resources would be maintained and sustained by Maori through the use of sustainable development methods such as kaitiakitanga and rahui.
The consultation process between Maori kin groups, developers and local councils is important. It is through consultation that many issues surrounding the appropriate implementation of kaitiakitanga be administered. The outcome of managing natural resources without consultation with Maori kin groups may have a negative effect on the sustainable development of New Zealand. The consultation process, as stated early, is imperative to environmental management and economic stability for many Maori. Although there are implications surrounding the consultation process and the understanding of kaitiakitanga, much more research is needed to address possible recommendations and policy changes related to these issues.
