In summary, this report serves as a discussion starter with respect to child protection policy reform in New Zealand. I began with a comprehensive background to the current policy claiming that the past has shaped existing legislation. What we have today, namely the CYPFA 1989, might have been forward-thinking legislation of the time but it has failed ideologically and practically. The analysis conducted demonstrates that the DRM is an important step towards reform, but on its own is not the solution to the problems with current child protection policy. Therefore, this reform must be supported by the adoption of four other recommendations that were provided in the discussion section of this report.
