| WHY COUNCILS SHOULD CARE

  1. New Zealand local government legislation requires it (NZ Government, 2010).
  2. To act in accordance with Article 12 United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child as the ability to be involved in community decision making is seen as a basic human right (United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, 1990).
  3. Young people are often heavy users of Local Government services and their input into the operation of these services will likely be outcome focussed which is a required focus of Local Government.
  4. Engagement with politics at a young age correlates strongly with a continued engagement throughout a person’s adult life (Catt, 2005).
  5. Research indicates that youth have an interest in Local Government and want to have a direct input regarding its functioning (Freeman et al., 2004).
