Title
“Reduction of alcohol related harm in the Auckland CBD”
Project purpose
Alcohol related crime, traffic incidents and other nuisance behavior as the result of non-sensible drinking in Auckland city impose a severe burden to the resources of our society and it degrades the level of safety for the local residents. The goal of this project is to seek feasible methods that help to promote a safe and responsible enjoyment of liquor in Auckland CBD. This policy goal can be linked with the broader issue of alcohol related harm in New Zealand or the promotion of a safer Auckland CBD.
The method employed in this study follows the model of the multi-goal analysis because the concept of ‘harm’ cannot be practically monetized (although there are monetized elements).
Summary of Findings and Policy alternatives
- International literature and local evidence have shown a 24 hours operation policy enhances alcohol related harm such as violent crime, traffic accidents, property damage and other disorderly behaviors.
- The ‘One way door’ policy is a practical and cost-effective policy alternative.
- In order to achieve optimum results, supplement policies such as the increase in the price of alcohol and increase the minimum age of bar patrons are also advisable.
